Patience [T]

8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience is better than pride.
9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools. (Ecclesiastes 7:8-9) (NIV)

Patience is better than pride. With patience, one is able to tolerate when he is offended. But for the proud, when he is offended, he is quickly angered and reacts hastily.

26 26 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly
For the salvation of the Lord.
27 27 It is good for a man to bear
The yoke in his youth. (Lamentations 3:26-27) (NKJV)

26 26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
27 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young. (Lamentations 3:26-27)

15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience. (Luke 8:15) (NKJV)

15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. (Luke 8:15) (NIV)

18 But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19 By your patience possess your souls. (Luke 21:18-19) (NKJV)

18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 Stand firm, and you will win life. (Luke 21:18-19) (NIV)

18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. (Luke 21:18-19) (RSV)

Patience also has the meaning of perseverance, persistence, and endurance.

eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;  (Romans 2:7) (NKJV)

To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honorand immortality, he will give eternal life. (Romans 2:7) (NIV)

to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; (Romans 2:7) (RSV)

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3-5) (NKJV)

Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:3-5) (NIV)

More than that, we[d] rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. (Romans 5:3-5) (RSV)

Tribulations and sufferings will build our patience, perseverance and endurance. Patience, perseverance and endurance helps us to build virtuous character.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; (1 Corinthians 13:4-5) (NKJV)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5) (NIV)

Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; (1 Corinthians 13:4-5) (RSV)

But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, (2 Corinthians 6:4-6) (NKJV)

Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;  (2 Corinthians 6:4-6) (NIV)

but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love,  (2 Corinthians 6:4-6) (RSV)

Here, we see that the word "patience" is interchangeable with endurance, forbearance and longsuffering.

12 Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds. (2 Corinthians 12:12) (NKJV)

12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles. (2 Corinthians 12:12) (NIV)

12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you in all patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. (2 Corinthians 12:12) (RSV)

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. (Galatians 6:9) (NKJV)

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9) (NIV)

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3) (NKJV)

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the callingyou have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. (Ephesians 4:1-2) (NIV)

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:1-3) (RSV)

10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasingHim, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. (Colossians 11:10-12) (NKJV)

10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.  (Colossians 1:10-12) (NIV)

10 to lead a life worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us[b] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (Colossians 1:10-12) (RSV)

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. (Colossians 3:12-13) (NKJV)

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14) (NIV)

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, 13 forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Colossians 3:12-13) (RSV)

remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, (1 Thessalonians 1:3) (NKJV)

We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 1:3) (NIV)

remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 1:3) (RSV)

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.  (1 Thessalonians 5:14) (NKJV)

14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. (1 Thessalonians 5:14) (NIV)

14 And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. (1 Thessalonians 5:14) (RSV)

When doing exhortation and encourage of the lazy people, the faint-hearted and disheartened, and the weak, we must exercise patience with all of them. Our effort of admonishment, exhortation and encouragement may not be effective immediately, it takes time, so we must be patient.

Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ. (2 Thessalonians 3:5) (NKJV)

May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. (2 Thessalonians 3:5) (NIV)

May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. (2 Thessalonians 3:5) (RSV)

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,[b] but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;  (1 Timothy 3:2-3) (NKJV)

Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. (1 Timothy 3:2-3) (NIV)

Now a bishop must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable, an apt teacher, no drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money. (1 Timothy 3:2-3) (RSV)

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. (1 Timothy 6:11) (NKJV)

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.  (1 Timothy 6:11) (RSV)

11 But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.  (1 Timothy 6:11) (RSV)

Believers are asked to pursue for these 5 items:
1) Righteousness and Godliness;
2) Faith;
3) Love, Patience (Endurance, Steadfastness), and Gentleness. These are three parts of the nine parts of the Fruit of The Spirit.

24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,   (2 Timothy 2:24-25) (NKJV)

24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,  (2 Timothy 2:24-25) (NIV)

23 Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth,  (2 Timothy 2:23-25) (RSV)

But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; (Titus 2:1-2) (NKJV)

You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith,in love and in endurance. (Titus 2:1-2) (NIV)

But as for you, teach what befits sound doctrine. Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. (Titus 2:1-2) (RSV)

11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:11-12) (NKJV)

12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. (Hebrews 6:11-12) (NIV)

15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.  (Hebrews 6:15) (NKJV)

15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. (Hebrews 6:15) (NIV)

15 And thus Abraham,[c] having patiently endured, obtained the promise. (Hebrews 6:15) (RSV)

36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:  (Hebrews 10:36) (NKJV)

36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.  (Hebrews 10:36) (NIV)

36 For you have need of endurance, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised. (Hebrews 10:36) (RSV)

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2) (NKJV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2) (NIV)

knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (James 1:3-4) (NKJV)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4) (NIV)

Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4) (RSV)

Trials (testing of faith) will enhance our patience / perseverance / steadfastness, which will make us more perfect, mature and complete.

19 So then,[a] my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20) (NKJV)

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. (James 1:19-20) (NIV)

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (James 5:7-8) NKJV)

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. (James 5:7-8) (NIV)

20 For what creditis it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. (1 Peter 2:20) (NKJV)

20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. (1 Peter 2:20) (NIV)

But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. (2 Peter 1:5-9) (NKJV)

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8) (NIV)

We believers should be diligent in seeking these qualities:
1) Faith,
2) Virtue / Goodness,
3) Knowledge,
4) Self-control,
5) Patience / Perseverance,
6) Godliness,
5) Brotherly kindness / Mutual affection,
6) Love.

For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these things are yours and abound, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8) (RSV)

I, John, both[e] your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 1:9) (NKJV)
I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. (Revelation 1:9) (NIV)

I John, your brother, who share with you in Jesus the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. (Revelation 1:19) (RSV)

Three in one package are:
1) tribulation / suffering,
2) kingdom,
3) patience / patient endurance.
As believers, we need to be patiently endure and wait for the kingdom, and face tribulations, persecutions and sufferings in the world.

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[c] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[d]
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people. (Revelation 13:10) (NIV)

12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. (Revelation 14:12) (NIV)

During times of persecution and tribulation, we believers must exercise patient endurance, remain steadfast and faithful to Jesus Christ.
