Proverbs chapter 13 (part 1) - Desires of the diligent are fully satisfied #Wise sayings of Solomon

Proverbs chapter 13.

Summary:  Wise person listens to instructions, but scoffer/mocker refuse correction. Be slow in speech, think twice before we speak, to avoid offending other people. The lazy person desires much but achieves nothing due to his laziness, but the diligent person will surely become rich. The righteous person hates falsehood and lies. Do not live luxuriously on credit, showing off the riches, yet owing huge debt. Pride will cause strife, but the wise listens to advice and reach agreeable solution. Wealth gained dishonestly will not last, but wealth gained through work and fair business will grow more and more. Do not set unrealistically high hope or ambition to avoid frustration.

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes. (Proverbs 13:1) (NIV)

A wise son hears his father’s instruction,
but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1) (RSV)

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 12:1) (NKJV)

A wise person will listen to the instruction of a wiser person. A wise person is receptive to reproof, correction, and alternative viewpoints. A wise person is open-minded to consider other people's ideas. A scoffer/mocker is too proud to accept rebuke, reproof or correction. This proud scoffer/mocker is right in his own eyes, and reluctant to accept other points of views, alternative ideas. To be receptive to instruction and reproof, we must have the humility and the open mind.

2 A man shall eat well by the fruit of his mouth,
But the soul of the unfaithful feeds on violence.
3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life,
But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:2-3) (NKJV)

2 From the fruit of his mouth a good man eats good,
but the desire of the treacherous is for violence.
3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life;
he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. (Proverbs 13:2-3) (RSV)

From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things,
but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.

Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,
but those who speak rashly will come to ruin. (Proverbs 13:2-3) (NIV)

The output and words of the good man are good things, such as good deeds, profitable business, successful career, respect and honour. The bad, unfaithful, treacherous man, on the other hand, has many evil desires which will bring violence and troubles to himself and other people.

The good man who is wise to guard his lips and careful with his words will not be offending his friends and enemies. When confronted with enemies, his careful words will mitigate and lower the anger of his enemies, causing himself less trouble, even preserving his own life.

He who guards his lips will think twice before he speaks, and careful with his speech. He is aware of the potential of adverse impact if wrong words and intonation are used.

Those who speak rashly and react too hastily will end up saying the wrong things, offending friends and relatives. Often offending other people may himself to ruin and destruction, to be unfriended by friends, to be hated by enemies.

4 A sluggard’s appetite is never filled,
but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. (Proverbs 13:4) (NIV)

4 The soul of the sluggard craves, and gets nothing,
while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. (Proverbs 13:4) (RSV)

4 The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing;
But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich. (Proverbs 13:4) (NKJV)

The sluggish and lazy person may have many wishes and wants, but is too lazy to work hard to earn the money, eventually not getting his wishes and wants. The lazy person is a procrastinator, lazing around, fantasizing, but not seriously putting his hands and minds into what he aims to do. All the ambitions of the lazy person is just an empty daydream, which could be realized if he works at it, but unfortunately he is too lazy to do it.

On the contrary, the diligent and hardworking person is willing to invest his time and energy into his work and business, hence achieving success, earning the money to get what he wants and wishes. With diligence and good financial intelligence, the diligent is surely gathering riches and wealth.

The misery and shame of the slothful. See how foolish and absurd they are; they desire the gains which the diligent get, but they hate the pains which the diligent take; they covet every thing that is to be coveted, but will do nothing that is to be done.

5 A righteous man hates lying,
But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.
6 Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless,
But wickedness overthrows the sinner. (Proverbs 13:5-6) (NKJV)

5 A righteous man hates falsehood,
but a wicked man acts shamefully and disgracefully.
6 Righteousness guards him whose way is upright,
but sin overthrows the wicked. (Proverbs 13:5-6) (RSV)

The righteous person hates lying and falsehood. He likes to say the right things, hear the right things. He makes decisions based on facts and figures, not based on rumours, gossips, and slanders.  On the contrary, the wicked person feels shameless to lie and slander, to spread false news, to spread untrue rumour and gossips.

The righteous person lives in godly and upright ways, good ways that are pleasing to God and other people. But the wicked person lives a life of sin, such as falsehood.

7 There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing;
And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches. (Proverbs 13:7) (NKJV)

7 One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. (Proverbs 13:7) (RSV)

7 One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. (Proverbs 13:7) (NIV)

The lesson of humility and low profile. One man lives luxuriously,  drives luxury cars, stays in an expensive house, wears high fashion, wears expensive watch and jewellery, and yet has huge debts. Another man lives more simply, drives a good non-luxury car, stays in a comfortable house, wears normal-priced clothes and watch, and yet has big amount of cash in the bank. There is no need to brag and show off one's riches. Not wise to compare and keep up with Joneses. Do not overspend on credit. But rather live in simple yet comfortable manner, in realistic lifestyle, save up the extra money rather than wasting on expensive, luxury items.

Pertaining to spiritual riches. Grace is the riches of the soul; it is true riches; but men commonly misrepresent themselves, either designedly or through mistake and ignorance of themselves. 1. There are many presuming hypocrites, that are really poor and empty of grace and yet either think themselves rich, and will not be convinced of their poverty, or pretend themselves rich, and will not own their poverty. 2. There are many timorous trembling Christians, that are spiritually rich, and full of grace, and yet think themselves poor, and will not be persuaded that they are rich, or, at least, will not own it; by their doubts and fears, their complaints and griefs, they make themselves poor

8 The ransom of a man’s life is his wealth,
but a poor man has no means of redemption.[a]  (Proverbs 13:8) (RSV)

8 A person’s riches may ransom their life,
but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. (Proverbs 13:8) (NIV)

In time of war, when the enemies have captured the city, the enemies will focus on the rich, seizing their property, money and riches. The lives of the rich people are endangered during captivity.  The poor hear not rebuke, are not censured, reproached, accused, nor brought into trouble, as the rich are; for nobody thinks it worth while to take notice of them. When the rich Jews were carried captives to Babylon the poor of the land were left2 Kgs. 25:12

9 The light of the righteous rejoices,
But the lamp of the wicked will be put out. (Proverbs 13:9) (NKJV)

9 The light of the righteous shines brightly,
but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. (Proverbs 13:9) (NIV)

For the righteous, there is much joy and rejoicing. The road ahead (the future) for the righteous is bright and positive. The righteous can see a good future ahead. On the contrary, the wicked faces lack of joy. depression and stress. For the wicked, his road ahead is dim and not easy.

10 10 Where there is strife, there is pride,
but wisdom is found in those who take advice. (Proverbs 13:10) (NIV)

10 10 By pride comes nothing but strife,
But with the well-advised is wisdom. (Proverbs 13:10) (NKJV)

10 10 By insolence the heedless make strife,
but with those who take advice is wisdom. (Proverbs 13:10) (RSV)

Because of pride, a person refuse to listen to other people's ideas and points of view. Because of pride, a person refuse to peaceable agreement. Because of pride, a person refuses to discuss and negotiate. Pride will cause strife, arguments, and quarrels.

On the contrary, the wise person is humble and willing to listen to advice of other people. The wise and humble person is willing to see from other people's viewpoints and consider other people's ideas, hence, avoiding strife. The wise person has much higher chance of coming to an agreeable solution when there are conflicts or differing opinions.

11 11 Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished,
But he who gathers by labor will increase. (Proverbs 13:11) (NKJV)

11 11 Wealth hastily gotten[b] will dwindle,
but he who gathers little by little will increase it. (Proverbs 13:11) (RSV)

11 11 Dishonest money dwindles away,
but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. (Proverbs 13:11) (NIV)

Easy come, easy go. Do not be involved in get rich quick schemes. This type of investment and scams will eventually fail. Do not be involved in speculative stocks and speculative indices play. These are highly risky, easy to make money, even easier to lose money. Do not use margin financing to invest or speculate in stocks. This is extremely high risk, with potential of making huge money with little money, with the danger of losing all money and even owing large debts if the stock price go down significantly. Bottomline, do not covet for money, do not be greedy.

Do not use dishonest means to make fast money. Do not the customers. Do not use unfair business practice. Because somehow fast money gained through dishonest means will not last.

But be diligent and hardworking in our work and our business. We can make money gradually, and save up the extra money in the bank, and also invest the extra money. We can surely become richer and wealthier using honest work, honest business practice.

12 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12) (RSV)

12 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12) (NIV)

A hope that is continually not fulfilled is depressing. Do not put our hope and ambition too high. Our hope and ambition should be realistic and achievable. There is no point in hoping for the impossible. Having too high a hope or too high an ambition will be frustrating. Be contented with what we have. Sufficient and adequate is good enough.

Nothing is more grievous than the disappointment of a raised expectation, though not in the thing itself by a denial, yet in the time of it by a delay: Hope deferred makes the heart sick and languishing, fretful and peevish; but hope quite dashed kills the heart, and the more high the expectation was raised the more cutting is the frustration of it. It is therefore our wisdom not to promise ourselves any great matters from the creature, not to feed ourselves with any vain hopes from this world.

When our desire is fulfilled, it brings much joy and gladness. We feed so alive and vibrant when the desire is fulfilled, or the ambition is achieved. So in order to make ourselves happier, set our desire, hope and ambition to realistic ones, so that they are achievable.

Proverbs chapter 11 (part 1) - Wise Sayings of Solomon. God hates dishonest businessman.

Proverbs chapter 11.

Summary: Honesty in business. Humble gains wisdom. Integrity is guide. Straight path of the righteous. Rewards of the righteous vs the wicked. Mouth can bless and curse. Success of righteous, death of the wicked.

Overview of Proverbs chapter 11
V. 1. Yahweh demands honesty in business practices.
V. 2. The egotist does not learn except in disgrace, but the humble gains wisdom.
Vv. 35-81819212331. These verses contrast the rewards of the righteous and the wicked. Wisdom concentrates on this world and has little to say about a future life. Therefore, each must receive the fruit of his or her ways in this life. The wicked will be trapped by their evil desires and destroyed. When they die, all is lost. The integrity of the righteous guides them in life, rescuing them from trouble and granting what is good.
Vv. 428Wealth has limitations that are exceeded by righteousness.
Vv. 91213. The mouth has the power to bless and curse. It can destroy, denigrate, and disclose confidential material. The wise know what to say, when to say it, and when to be silent.
Vv. 1011. The life-styles of the righteous and the wicked directly affect the well-being of their communities. They can be blessed or destroyed. Thus they rejoice in the success of the righteous and in the death of the wicked.
V. 14. The security of a people lies in the wisdom of their leaders.
V. 15. See 6:1.
Vv. 161724-27. Kindness and generosity not only help others, but they rebound to expand the quality of one's own life. The cruel and ruthless who hoard their resources earn the curses of the people and store up destruction for themselves.
V. 20. Behind the moral order of the universe stands a God who takes pleasure in those who are blameless and is displeased with those whose values are perverted. This is the basic theology of the wisdom teacher.
V. 22. Physical beauty unmatched by moral purity is as incongruous as a gold ring in a pig's snout.
V. 29. A fool destroys his own inheritance, and instead of becoming the head of his own family ends up serving one who is wiser.
V. 30. RSV follows the Greek, while the NIV attempts to make sense of the Hebrew. “Wins souls” means preserving lives.

1 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,    but a just weight is his delight.  (RSV)

1  Lord detests dishonest scales,    but accurate weights find favor with him.  (NIV)

1 Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight.  (NKJV)

God hates people who are dishonest in their business activities. God likes those who are honest and just in business deals. So as godly believers, we must always be fair, ethical, win-win in all our business dealings, so that God will bless our business.  From worldly point of view, fairness and win-win are also secular wisdom for business practices which will lead to more business deals, being favoured by customers and vendors alike.

God hates deceit in business, an abomination to the Lord. We must not have ill intent to be deceitful. Cheating and fraud are no-no, that we should not touch.

2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace;
but with the humble is wisdom.  (RSV)

Pride will eventually bring about disgrace and dishonour. But the humble will gain wisdom. To be wise, we need to learn. To be an effective learner, we need to humble ourselves and unlearn in order to learn and relearn. Humble heart and open mind enables us to learn knowledge, and gain wisdom.

Pride is one of the abominable sins. If we are Leaders, we must be careful to avoid being proud. We become Leaders because God wills it, God has given us certain talents, gifts and knowledge. Let's not be proud of our achievements, our leadership, our success. But we should humbly thank God for God's hand in enabling us to be leaders.

If we are rich and wealthy, we must remember our success is from the Lord. If God has blessed us much in material things, riches and wealth, let us remember to thank and praise God, and continue to humbly walk in Godly ways and in wisdom.

3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.  (RSV)

3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.  (NIV)

3 The integrity of the upright will guide them,
But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.  (NKJV)

Integrity should be our guiding principle in business dealings and all aspects of our lives. Crookedness and perversity would be counter-productive and destructive. Nobody likes to do business with a crooked and dishonest businessman. Hence, integrity, honesty, fairness, win-win should be our guiding principles for our business and general life.

4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.  (RSV)

4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.  (NIV)

Riches and wealth are only good for our lives in this world. In the life after, whatever riches and wealth we have now is worthless and useless in heaven. But righteousness is valued highly in eternal life. Hence, we must have a good balance. We must not be lazy, we must be diligent and hardworking in our work and business, to make a decent living for ourselves and our families. Yet we must also build and store up "treasures" in heaven. We must live in wise manner, godly and righteous ways, having a close relationship with God. As much as we need to invest wisely in this world, we must also invest in and for our eternal life.

5 The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,
but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.  (RSV)
The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight,
but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.  (NIV)

Righteous way is the straight way, the shorter route, the simpler and happier way. In the desert, taking the straight way is advantageous because the straight way is the shorter way. Shorter way is very important in the desert because there is scarcity of water in desert. If excessive time is spent in travelling, the travellers may run out of water and this is dangerous, so the direct and straight path is essential.

For those who choose live a sinful life, they will be troubled by the effects of their evil doing (e.g. fraud, deceit, adultery, extra-marital sex, stealing, assault).  They will be trapped by evil desires, by greed, by lust, by pride, etc.

Let us pray to God for a good control of our life. Let us pray that we do not end up submitting to Greed, Lust or Pride.

To be continued the next day.

Proverbs chapter 10 (part 2) - Wise Sayings of Solomon

Proverbs chapter 10.

Summary: The wise store up knowledge. Wealth of the wise protected and safe like a fortified city. Righteous people works and lives a good life. Control our lips to avoid transgression against other people. Speech of the righteous is esteemed and highly valued, being beneficial to other people. God's blessings includes Riches and Wealth without heavy toil.

Proverbs of Solomon  (NIV).
Wise Sayings of Solomon  (RSV) (NKJV).

14 14 Wise men lay up knowledge,
but the babbling of a fool brings ruin near. (RSV)

14 14 The wise store up knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.  (NIV)

1414 14 Wise people store up knowledge,
But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.  (NKJV)

Wise people loves to learn, and continually learn. Hence, wise people will gather and store up the knowledge. Whatever knowledge we learn may be useful at other time, so laying up the knowledge is good and beneficial.

On the contrary, the foolish hates learning, just love empty talking. In the long term, due to lack of learning, wisdom and knowledge, this would lead to his own ruins. Example of ruins could be poverty. Because of lack of knowledge and the foolish person's laziness, he will run into poverty and mediocrity.

Because of lack of practical wisdom and self control, the foolish person may get involved in immoral sins, lots of extra marital affairs, hence wasting much of his money, time and effort in satisfying his fleshly lusts and fulfilling his high sexual desires. Despite good income, he will waste off his extra money on all these women and ruin himself.

Because of jealousy and greed for power and status, the foolish person may slander and backstab another person. The habit of slandering will make other people hate this foolish person. In the end, he will many friends, thus ruining himself.

15 15 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;

the poverty of the poor is their ruin.  (RSV)

15 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,
but poverty is the ruin of the poor.  (NIV)

15 15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
The destruction of the poor is their poverty.  (NKJV)

For the wise and rich/wealthy, his wealth is properly stored and secured as if inside a fortified city. The wise and rich will not buy all his money and wealth all into a single instrument/investment form. The wise and rich will put his money and wealth into various forms such as cash into the current/check account, savings account, and term deposit, stocks and shares, gold, unit trusts, loan stocks / debentures, investment into business, property investment, etc.

For the unwise people may not necessarily have the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to preserve the money they earn, hence causing their poverty.

Reasons of poverty are possibly:

1) Good income but waste it on unnecessary expenses (fleshly lust, carnal/worldly desires, lust of the eyes).
2) Good income but not storing up a portion of income. No planned and continual savings.
3) Low income due to lack of knowledge or lack of skills.
4) Low income due to laziness.

In comparison, wisdom is important. Because the wise people love to learn new knowledge and skills, including financial wisdom.

16 16 The wage of the righteous leads to life,
the gain of the wicked to sin.  (RSV)

16 16 The wages of the righteous is life,
but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.  (NIV)

16 16 The labor of the righteous leads to life,
The wages of the wicked to sin.  (NKJV)

The workings of the righteous will result in godly life, a fuller life in this world, a joyous spiritual life, and eternal life. On the contrary, the workings of the wicked result in a sinful life (various types of sins including wicked sins and milder sins), and spiritual death. Income earned through wicked means (e.g. fraud, evil schemes, cheating, stealing, robbing) when come into the hands of the unwise people may be wasted through pride (luxury car, branded watches) and immorality (prostitutes, adultery).

17 17 He who heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof goes astray.  (RSV)

17 17 Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life,
but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.  (NIV)

17 17 He who keeps instruction is in the way of life,
But he who refuses correction goes astray.  (NKJV)

To be wise, we must listen and take heed of instructions. Learning the instructions and keeping them in our minds and hearts, and doing accordingly is to right/correct way leading to a meaningful and good life in this world as well as good spiritual life.

Living as wise believers, we must also be receptive to reproofs, rebukes and corrections. We must be humble enough to accept reproof. "To err is man, to forgive is divine." We must be willing to humbly admit our weakness and shortcoming. We must not feel offended when reproofed by other brethren, or rebuked by non-believers.

Because those who refuse correction and rebuke due to their pride will not be able to continually improve. Everyone has weakness, shortcomings. Everyone makes error. Be open minded to reproof and rebukes.

Especially for Leaders....If the Leader is making a mistake, the Team member mentions the error and suggest the correction, the Leader must humbly accept the reproof for the sake of himself and the team. If the Leader with huge pride blatantly refused to be corrected and insist on going the wrong direction, he is leading his Team astray, going wrong direction, not meeting the Team objectives.

18 18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and he who utters slander is a fool.
19 19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

but he who restrains his lips is prudent.  (RSV)
18 Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips
and spreads slander is a fool.
19 Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
but the prudent hold their tongues.  (NIV)

"Concealing hatred" may indicate a person with malicious intent, a two-faced person, a person who hides his likes and dislikes. Lying, fraud, cheating, slandering, false accusation...all these are wicked doings of the foolish people.

Foolish people do not refer to non-believers, but I personally think, folly is also in many believers. Believers who do not live fully in wisdom, righteous and godly ways are living in folly. Wisdom is related to God, folly is related to the Devil.

As believers, we should think: How many percent of the time we follow the Wisdom pathway? How many percent of the time we walk in the path of folly?

When we talk a lot, we have higher tendency to transgress and sin. Lips can be a good, beneficial instrument as well as an evil, wicked weapon. How do we want to use our lips?  To sing praises and thanks God?  For beneficial purposes to other people?  Or to gossip, spread rumours and lies, slander and backstabbing? We must control our lips so that our lips do not help us to sin and transgress against other people. Our lips speak of what is in our minds and our hearts. We need to have noble thoughts and hearts of kindness, so that our lips speak forth good and not evil.

20 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the mind of the wicked is of little worth.
21 21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.  (RSV)

20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21 The lips of the righteous nourish many,
but fools die for lack of sense.  (NIV)
Righteous people speak forth good and beneficial sayings. From the lips of the righteous, the talk is good, noble, true, beneficial to other people. The speech of the righteous is highly valued, appreciated and respected by other people.

As believers walking in godly ways, we must speak what is good and right, so that we can be testimony for God's goodness and demonstrate our wisdom. With wise talk, we will be honoured by others for our ways of wisdom.

On the contrary, the mind and heart of the wicked person is lowly regarded by other people. From a wicked mind and wicked hearts, the lips are fully of lies, slander, and destructive speech. The way of the wicked is leading to spiritual death.

22 22 The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.[b] (RSV)

22 22 The blessing of the Lord brings wealth,
without painful toil for it.   (NIV)

22 22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it.  (NKJV)

God's blessings can make a person rich and wealth without heavy toil. With little effort, yet abundance of riches and wealth...that is the kind of blessings God could pour out on whom he desires to bless.

Who does God like to bless? In Deuteronomy 28 verses 1-14, God promises to bless abundantly those who obey God.

http://micfood.blogspot.com/2013/12/deuteronomy-281-14-blessings-for.html/

“And if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.

The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your barns, and in all that you undertake; and he will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
11 And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, within the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you his good treasury the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the Lord will make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall tend upward only, and not downward; if you obey the commandments of the Lordyour God, which I command you this day, being careful to do them, 14 and if you do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.  (Extract of Deuteronomy 28:1-14) (RSV)
