Proverbs chapter 14 (part 2) - Even in laughter the heart may sorrow #Wise sayings of Solomon

Proverbs chapter 14.

Summary:  The upright person finds favour with God and men. Emotional feelings like sorrow and joy is felt by the individual alone. Greatness of estate of the wicked will reduce, whereas estate of the righteous will steadily increase. Certain activities are deemed norm and acceptable by men, but is sin to God. The good and righteous person is positively rewarded and blessed by God. We must avoid being "simple", easily believing everything we hear. The prudent will investigate and study every detail before making decision. We need to control anger, and avoid making hasty, wrong decisions, and wrong actions which are later regretted. The prudent is glorified for his knowledge. Even the bad guys respect and honour the good and righteous person due to his good deeds.

9 Fools mock at sin,
But among the upright there is favor. (Proverbs 14:9) (NKJV)

9 God scorns the wicked,[d]
    but the upright enjoy his favor. (Proverbs 14:9) (RSV)

9 Fools mock at making amends for sin,
    but goodwill is found among the upright. (Proverbs 14:9) (NIV)

Favour - They find favour both with God and men.

The foolish and the wicked are so hardened in sinful habits and sinful activities so much so that they mock at sin. They laugh off at the sins of other peoples, sins by themselves. To them, sinning which have no bad consequences. They enjoy sinning and have no intention to depart from their evil ways.

The righteous and the upright are doing goodwill among each other, charitable deeds, giving alms, always saying and doing the right things. They find favour with God. Other people also like them for their good deeds.

10 10 The heart knows its own bitterness,
And a stranger does not share its joy. (Proverbs 14:10) (NKJV)

10 10 Each heart knows its own bitterness,
    and no one else can share its joy. (Proverbs 14:10) (NIV)

Bitterness - The inward griefs and joys of mens hearts, are not known to any but a man's self.
We do not know what stings of conscience, or consuming passions, torment the prosperous sinner. Nor does the world know the peace of mind a serious Christian enjoys, even in poverty and sickness.

When a person feels emotionally down, such as sorrowful, depressed, grief, only he himself can feel it. Other people can be empathetic or sympathetic, but cannot fill the real pain in the heart of the emotionally down.

Similarly, when a person is filled with joy and gladness, only he himself is able to feel this real joy.  Others can watch, others can be joyful together, but cannot feel the joy in another's heart. As for spiritual joy, it is also individualistic. Spiritual joy is felt by the righteous person who walk in God's ways. He may share the good news, the gospel, but cannot share out the spiritual joy.

11 11 The house of the wicked will be overthrown,
But the tent of the upright will flourish. (Proverbs 14:11) (NKJV)

11 11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
    but the tent of the upright will flourish. (Proverbs 14:11) (RSV)

Sin ruins many great families; whilst righteousness often raises and strengthens even mean families

Great families and huge estates will suffer downfall because of wrong deeds, sinful ways, unfair business practices, foolish financial management, wasting of money on carnal and worldly desires.

Families with mediocre income and little assets will also grow prosperous and increase in assets. For doing good deeds and living in righteous ways, they will be blessed by God in their work and business. They will grow in riches and wealth. They will gain honor and respect.

12 12 There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12) (NKJV)

12 12 There is a way that appears to be right,
    but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 14:12) (NIV)

Right - There are some evil courses which men may think to be lawful and good. The end - The event shews that they were sinful and destructive.
The ways of carelessness, of worldliness, and of sensuality, seem right to those that walk in them; but self-deceivers prove self-destroyers. See the vanity of carnal mirth.

There are certain activities/norms that seem morally acceptable to men, but not acceptable to God. Example: fornication seemed to be ok for boyfriend and girlfriend in love with each other, but to God, this is a sin. Example: telling white lies, misrepresentation of financial accounts, exaggeration of business prospects in the prospectus, seemed to be widely practised, but a lie is a lie, a lie is a sin.
The way of ignorance and carelessness, the way of worldliness and earthly-mindedness, the way of sensuality and flesh-pleasing, seem right to those that walk in them, much more the way of hypocrisy in religion. All these may seem right, but is actually wrong in the sight of God.

13 13 Even in laughter the heart may sorrow,
And the end of mirth may be grief. (Proverbs 14:13) (NKJV)

13 13 Even in laughter the heart is sad,
    and the end of joy is grief. (Proverbs 14:13) (RSV)

13 13 Even in laughter the heart may ache,
    and rejoicing may end in grief. (Proverbs 14:13) (NIV)

In laughter - The outward signs of joy are often mixed with real sorrow.

In merrymaking, partying and clubbing, there is plenty of laughter and seemingly happiness. In wine, women and song, there is plenty of laughter and seemingly happiness. If there is true sorrow in the heart, all the happiness during partying, during drinking, etc. is just temporary.

When the alcohol in blood is diminished, the original sorrow or grief still remains. When the music and the party ends, the sorrow and grief will be back. All the worldly entertainment can only bring temporary happiness.

For true joy, we should live in the Spirit, for the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as per Galatians 4:22-23a. In God alone, can we find true and everlasting joy. Living our life in the principles of wisdom and ways of righteousness will bring us more joy than the worldly entertainment, and substance abuse (alcohol, ecstasy, etc.).

14 14 The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways,
But a good man will be satisfied from above.[a  (Proverbs 14:14) (NKJV)

In heart - He who departs from God inwardly. Filled - With the fruit of his ways, the punishment of his sins. Satisfied - From the pious temper of his own heart, which cleaves to the Lord, he shall receive unspeakable comfort.

14 14 A perverse man will be filled with the fruit of his ways,
    and a good man with the fruit of his deeds.[f (Proverbs 14:14) (RSV)

14 14 The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways,
    and the good rewarded for theirs. (Proverbs 14:14) (NIV)

The backslider in heart has tuned his heart away from God. Backslider could be a faithful believer who has somehow, for some reasons e.g. temptation or grievance, turned away from God. Anyway, the backslider, the perverse  and the faithless are similar in one manner, they are all not living a righteous life. They are living in ways that are contrary to God's commands. They will be negatively rewarded due to their sins and wrongdoings in their lives.

On the contrary, the good and righteous man, is living a life full of good deeds, in obedience to God, is concerned about heavenly/spiritual matters, and will be rewarded and blessed by God. He will be positively rewarded for his righteous and godly ways, and his good deeds.

15 15 The simple believes every word,
But the prudent considers well his steps.
16 16 A wise man fears and departs from evil,
But a fool rages and is self-confident.
17 17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly,
And a man of wicked intentions is hated.
18 18 The simple inherit folly,
But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19 19 The evil will bow before the good,
And the wicked at the gates of the righteous. (Proverbs 14:15-19) (NKJV)

15 15 The simple believes everything,
    but the prudent looks where he is going. (Proverbs 14:15) (RSV)

The simple - A foolish man. Looketh - He orders his dealings in the world with due circumspection, not considering so much what other men say as what he ought to do.

15 15 The simple believe anything,
    but the prudent give thought to their steps. (Proverbs 14:15) (NIV)

The simple often takes things at face valve. The simple can easy believe other people. When faced with a false prophet or false teacher, the simple can easy sway and believer whatever said by the false prophet/teacher. The simple does not investigate in detail, and can easily jump to conclusion. The simple does not weigh and compare the options. The simple does not consider multiple points of view before deciding.

On the contrary, the prudent person is wiser. The prudent will consider every step, every detail. The prudent will investigate and study the case before making judgement. The prudent will compare the options before selecting. The prudent will make decision based on facts and figures, not hearsay, not gossip. The prudent does not easily believer some gossip, rumour or hearsay.

In these days where social media is popular, we have to be careful with the "news" and "updates" that we read. The news or updates in Facebook, Twitter, WhatApp, WeChat may not necessarily be true or accurate.

16 16 A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil,
    but a fool throws off restraint and is careless.
17 17 A man of quick temper acts foolishly,
    but a man of discretion is patient.[g  (Proverbs 14:16-17) (RSV)

Feareth - Trembles at God's judgments when they are either inflicted or threatened. Rageth - Frets against God; or is enraged against his messengers. Confident - Secure and insensible of his danger.
Foolishly - His passion hurries him into foolish speeches and actions. Wicked devices - One who suppresses his passion, but meditates revenge. Hated - Both by God and men.
16 The wise fear the Lord and shun evil,
    but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.
17 A quick-tempered person does foolish things,
    and the one who devises evil schemes is hated. (Proverbs 16-17) (NIV)

The wise person will always fear the Lord, live a righteous life, doing good deeds, obeying God's commands, slow to anger. He will avoid temptations and situations of sin. He will avoid doing anything which is evil in the eyes of God.

But the foolish person does not control himself, subject himself to temptations, allowing himself to partake in wrongful deeds. The foolish person is careless with his life, careless with his speech, and does control his temper. The foolish person gets angry easily, and over-reacts, and do things that he may regret otherwise. When a sinful temptation comes, such as a sexy and beautiful prostitute, he does not restrain himself from her seduction. In a quarrel with his wife, he may angrily chase his wife out of the house, or run away from home, or want to file for divorce.

To avoid doing foolish things during fits of anger, we must practice self-control to control outburst of anger. In anger, we must control our lips so as not to say things that will be regretted later. In anger, we must curtail our mind and thoughts so as not to make a hasty, wrong decision which is based on anger and not rationale.

Malicious men are justly dreaded and detested, for they are much more dangerous and mischievous to all societies: A man of wicked devices, who stifles his resentments till he has an opportunity of being revenged, and is secretly plotting how to wrong his neighbour and to do him an ill turn, as Cain to kill Abel, such a man as this is hated by all mankind. The character of an angry man is pitiable; through the surprise of a temptation he disturbs and disgraces himself, but it is soon over, and he is sorry for it.

18 18 The simple acquire folly,
    but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. (Proverbs 14:18) (RSV)

Inherit - They possess it as their inheritance, holding it fast, and glorying in it. Knowledge - The saving knowledge of God and of their own duty.
Sin is the shame of sinners; but wisdom is the honour of the wise.

The prudent person is given honour and gains much knowledge. The prudent's head is filled with vast, useful knowledge. Because he is willing to learn, keen to learn, receptive to instruction and reproof.

On the other hand, the simple person takes things easy, and is too lazy to learn. He is not interested to know more and to learn more knowledge. With lack of knowledge, a lot of his thoughts and deeds are not based on knowledge and facts. The simple may enjoy hearing gossips and rumours. His lack of real knowledge is the folly.

The simple, who love simplicity, get nothing by it; they inherit folly. They have it by inheritance, so some. This corruption of nature is derived from our first parents, and all the calamities that attend it we have by kind; it was the inheritance they transmitted to their degenerate race, an hereditary disease. They are as fond of it as a man of his inheritance, hold it as fast, and are as loth to part with it.

19 19 The evil bow down before the good,
    the wicked at the gates of the righteous. (Proverbs 14:19) (RSV)

19 19 Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,
    and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. (Proverbs 14:19) (NIV)

The evil - Good men shall have the pre - eminency over the wicked.
Even bad men acknowledge the excellency of God's people

The good and righteous person will be honoured by all, including the bad and wicked people. Because of the good deeds, the good and righteous person will earn the respect of the bad guys too. Good and wise words of the righteous are also pleasant to the ears of the bad guys too.

Proverbs chapter 10 (part 2) - Wise Sayings of Solomon

Proverbs chapter 10.

Summary: The wise store up knowledge. Wealth of the wise protected and safe like a fortified city. Righteous people works and lives a good life. Control our lips to avoid transgression against other people. Speech of the righteous is esteemed and highly valued, being beneficial to other people. God's blessings includes Riches and Wealth without heavy toil.

Proverbs of Solomon  (NIV).
Wise Sayings of Solomon  (RSV) (NKJV).

14 14 Wise men lay up knowledge,
    but the babbling of a fool brings ruin near. (RSV)

14 14 The wise store up knowledge,
    but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.  (NIV)

1414 14 Wise people store up knowledge,
But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.  (NKJV)

Wise people loves to learn, and continually learn. Hence, wise people will gather and store up the knowledge. Whatever knowledge we learn may be useful at other time, so laying up the knowledge is good and beneficial.

On the contrary, the foolish hates learning, just love empty talking. In the long term, due to lack of learning, wisdom and knowledge, this would lead to his own ruins. Example of ruins could be poverty. Because of lack of knowledge and the foolish person's laziness, he will run into poverty and mediocrity.

Because of lack of practical wisdom and self control, the foolish person may get involved in immoral sins, lots of extra marital affairs, hence wasting much of his money, time and effort in satisfying his fleshly lusts and fulfilling his high sexual desires. Despite good income, he will waste off his extra money on all these women and ruin himself.

Because of jealousy and greed for power and status, the foolish person may slander and backstab another person. The habit of slandering will make other people hate this foolish person. In the end, he will many friends, thus ruining himself.

15 15 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;

    the poverty of the poor is their ruin.  (RSV)

15 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,
    but poverty is the ruin of the poor.  (NIV)

15 15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
The destruction of the poor is their poverty.  (NKJV)

For the wise and rich/wealthy, his wealth is properly stored and secured as if inside a fortified city. The wise and rich will not buy all his money and wealth all into a single instrument/investment form. The wise and rich will put his money and wealth into various forms such as cash into the current/check account, savings account, and term deposit, stocks and shares, gold, unit trusts, loan stocks / debentures, investment into business, property investment, etc.

For the unwise people may not necessarily have the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to preserve the money they earn, hence causing their poverty.

Reasons of poverty are possibly:

1) Good income but waste it on unnecessary expenses (fleshly lust, carnal/worldly desires, lust of the eyes).
2) Good income but not storing up a portion of income. No planned and continual savings.
3) Low income due to lack of knowledge or lack of skills.
4) Low income due to laziness.

In comparison, wisdom is important. Because the wise people love to learn new knowledge and skills, including financial wisdom.

16 16 The wage of the righteous leads to life,
    the gain of the wicked to sin.  (RSV)

16 16 The wages of the righteous is life,
    but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.  (NIV)

16 16 The labor of the righteous leads to life,
The wages of the wicked to sin.  (NKJV)

The workings of the righteous will result in godly life, a fuller life in this world, a joyous spiritual life, and eternal life. On the contrary, the workings of the wicked result in a sinful life (various types of sins including wicked sins and milder sins), and spiritual death. Income earned through wicked means (e.g. fraud, evil schemes, cheating, stealing, robbing) when come into the hands of the unwise people may be wasted through pride (luxury car, branded watches) and immorality (prostitutes, adultery).

17 17 He who heeds instruction is on the path to life,
    but he who rejects reproof goes astray.  (RSV)

17 17 Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life,
    but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.  (NIV)

17 17 He who keeps instruction is in the way of life,
But he who refuses correction goes astray.  (NKJV)

To be wise, we must listen and take heed of instructions. Learning the instructions and keeping them in our minds and hearts, and doing accordingly is to right/correct way leading to a meaningful and good life in this world as well as good spiritual life.

Living as wise believers, we must also be receptive to reproofs, rebukes and corrections. We must be humble enough to accept reproof. "To err is man, to forgive is divine." We must be willing to humbly admit our weakness and shortcoming. We must not feel offended when reproofed by other brethren, or rebuked by non-believers.

Because those who refuse correction and rebuke due to their pride will not be able to continually improve. Everyone has weakness, shortcomings. Everyone makes error. Be open minded to reproof and rebukes.

Especially for Leaders....If the Leader is making a mistake, the Team member mentions the error and suggest the correction, the Leader must humbly accept the reproof for the sake of himself and the team. If the Leader with huge pride blatantly refused to be corrected and insist on going the wrong direction, he is leading his Team astray, going wrong direction, not meeting the Team objectives.

18 18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips,
    and he who utters slander is a fool.
19 19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

   but he who restrains his lips is prudent.  (RSV)
18 Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips
    and spreads slander is a fool.
19 Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
    but the prudent hold their tongues.  (NIV)

"Concealing hatred" may indicate a person with malicious intent, a two-faced person, a person who hides his likes and dislikes. Lying, fraud, cheating, slandering, false accusation...all these are wicked doings of the foolish people.

Foolish people do not refer to non-believers, but I personally think, folly is also in many believers. Believers who do not live fully in wisdom, righteous and godly ways are living in folly. Wisdom is related to God, folly is related to the Devil.

As believers, we should think: How many percent of the time we follow the Wisdom pathway? How many percent of the time we walk in the path of folly?

When we talk a lot, we have higher tendency to transgress and sin. Lips can be a good, beneficial instrument as well as an evil, wicked weapon. How do we want to use our lips?  To sing praises and thanks God?  For beneficial purposes to other people?  Or to gossip, spread rumours and lies, slander and backstabbing? We must control our lips so that our lips do not help us to sin and transgress against other people. Our lips speak of what is in our minds and our hearts. We need to have noble thoughts and hearts of kindness, so that our lips speak forth good and not evil.

20 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
    the mind of the wicked is of little worth.
21 21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
    but fools die for lack of sense.  (RSV)

20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
    but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21 The lips of the righteous nourish many,
    but fools die for lack of sense.  (NIV)
Righteous people speak forth good and beneficial sayings. From the lips of the righteous, the talk is good, noble, true, beneficial to other people. The speech of the righteous is highly valued, appreciated and respected by other people.

As believers walking in godly ways, we must speak what is good and right, so that we can be testimony for God's goodness and demonstrate our wisdom. With wise talk, we will be honoured by others for our ways of wisdom.

On the contrary, the mind and heart of the wicked person is lowly regarded by other people. From a wicked mind and wicked hearts, the lips are fully of lies, slander, and destructive speech. The way of the wicked is leading to spiritual death.

22 22 The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
    and he adds no sorrow with it.[b] (RSV)

22 22 The blessing of the Lord brings wealth,
    without painful toil for it.   (NIV)

22 22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it.  (NKJV)

God's blessings can make a person rich and wealth without heavy toil. With little effort, yet abundance of riches and wealth...that is the kind of blessings God could pour out on whom he desires to bless.

Who does God like to bless? In Deuteronomy 28 verses 1-14, God promises to bless abundantly those who obey God.

http://micfood.blogspot.com/2013/12/deuteronomy-281-14-blessings-for.html/

“And if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.

The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your barns, and in all that you undertake; and he will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
11 And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, within the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you his good treasury the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the Lord will make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall tend upward only, and not downward; if you obey the commandments of the Lordyour God, which I command you this day, being careful to do them, 14 and if you do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.  (Extract of Deuteronomy 28:1-14) (RSV)

Proverbs chapter 7 - the Seductive Prostitute

Proverbs chapter 7.

Summary:  We are warned against going near to the house of sin, near the adulterous woman, near the prostitute. The story of the seductive prostitute tells about how she will entice and seduce the foolish young man. She will seduce him, promising him a rewarding and enjoyable time. But submitting to the seduction of the prostitute may eventually lead to spiritual death, self destruction, and the heart turning away from God.

Warning against the Adulterous Woman  (NIV).
The False Attractions of Adultery  (RSV).

1 My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
2 keep my commandments and live,
    keep my teachings as the apple of your eye;
3 bind them on your fingers,
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    and call insight your intimate friend;
5 to preserve you from the loose woman,
    from the adventuress with her smooth words.  (RSV)

4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    and to insight, “You are my relative.”
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
    from the wayward woman with her seductive words.  (NIV)

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
And call understanding your nearest kin,
That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
From the seductress who flatters with her words.  (NKJV)

We are to keep the words of God, commands and teachings within us. Let the commands and teaching be at tips of our fingers. Let the commands and teachings be forever written in our hearts. God's commands are good for our daily living. We must treasure and preserve God's teachings. Wisdom is related to commands and teachings.

Wisdom and Understanding/Insight should be our guiding principles; this will help us keep away from the loose, adulterous, immoral woman, the seductress with flattering speech. We must avoid the sin of immorality and infidelity.

The Crafty Harlot  (NKJV).

6 For at the window of my house
I looked through my lattice,
7 And saw among the simple,
I perceived among the youths,
A young man devoid of understanding,
8 Passing along the street near her corner;
And he took the path to her house
9 In the twilight, in the evening,
In the black and dark night.  (NKJV)

This is a story of a young, unwise man who has no understanding. He often pass by the brothel, at any time of day and night.

Application:  Do not go to the house of sin. Do not even go near it. Lest we be tempted. We should avoid the company of adulterous friends, friends who love to visit prostitutes. Lest we be influenced by them.

10 10 And lo, a woman meets him,
    dressed as a harlot, wily of heart.[a]
11 11 She is loud and wayward,
    her feet do not stay at home;
12 12 now in the street, now in the market,
    and at every corner she lies in wait.  (RSV)

10 10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
    dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 11 (She is unruly and defiant,
    her feet never stay at home;
12 12 now in the street, now in the squares,
    at every corner she lurks.)  (NIV)

10 10 And there a woman met him,
With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart.
11 11 She was loud and rebellious,
Her feet would not stay at home.
12 12 At times she was outside, at times in the open square,
Lurking at every corner.  (NKJV)

This story has literary interpretation, i.e. a prostitute, and figurative interpretation, i.e. immorality, sins, wickedness, fleshly lust, temptation, carnal desires.

A prostitute meets the foolish, young man.
Characteristics of the prostitute:
1)  Appearance and clothing of seduction.
2)  Crafty heart and crafty intent, to seduce.
3)  Loud, talkative and chatty.
4)  Wayward, unruly, rebellious.
5)  She is outside there, at anywhere, at every where.

This concept of "anywhere and everywhere" makes me think that the "harlot" in this passage should not be limited to the prostitute, sex worker.  This "harlot" could also fleshly lust and carnal desires, such as illicit sex, fornication, pornography, gambling, alcoholic drinking, drug abuse, greed for money and wealth, overeating.

13 She took hold of him and kissed him
    and with a brazen face she said:
14 “Today I fulfilled my vows,
    and I have food from my fellowship offering at home.
15 So I came out to meet you;
    I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have covered my bed
    with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed
    with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.  (NIV)

The prostitute would approach the foolish, young man with no sense/understanding, kissed him to entice him. With smooth and flattering words, she will entice him.  She openly invites him to have sex. In today's reality, the flattering words and enticement could come in the forms of revealing clothes, looking sexy flaunting her breasts and moving her hips provocatively, dancing and winking of her eyes, a sexy smile.

For the professionals and businessmen, the enticement of "Greed for more money and massive wealth" is even more tempting than the sexy and beautiful prostitute. Greed for money and wealth has hindered many believers from spending time with God, following the commands and teachings of God. In the pursuit of Greed for more money and greater wealth, many believers have bent the rule, entertained customer in places of sin (brothels, KTV with girls and sex, golf clubs offering corrupt, playing 18+1 holes, excessive drinking and clubbing).  To satisfy the Greed, some believers would go for a round of golf on Sunday morning with their clients, instead of going to church for Sunday service.

18 18 Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning;
    let’s enjoy ourselves with love!
19 19 My husband is not at home;
    he has gone on a long journey.
20 20 He took his purse filled with money
    and will not be home till full moon.”  (NIV)

The prostitute tempts the foolish young man with sex, offering to have sex all night long. Fleshly lust are very real and tempting. Believers are also human, having fleshly lust, carnal desires, just like everyone else in the world.  Sex is one of the greatest enjoyment, all throughout the centuries, all over the world. Even for Adam, sex with Eve was the best enjoyment for him, much better than playing with the animal, birds, fishes, etc.

The prostitute gave good justification, that she was alone and lonely, that her husband was outstation for a long period of time. Beware of the seductress! Beware of temptations!

Be watchful of other forms of sins, immorality, fleshly lust.  There are sometimes good justifications, For instance, need to entertain the clients, hence need to go to the girly bars.  Need more money for children's education, hence need to give bribes in order to secure more orders, so more money.

21 21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
    she seduced him with her smooth talk.
22 22 All at once he followed her
    like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer[a] stepping into a noose[b]
23     23 till an arrow pierces his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
    little knowing it will cost him his life.  (NIV)

The prostitute seduced with persuasive/seductive words, and smooth talk. The tongue is a very powerful weapon. The tongue could be very convincing and persuasive.

With the sweet, persuasive words of the prostitute, and charmed by her beauty and sexy body, the foolish young man takes up the offer of the prostitute.  Submitting to "the seduction of the prostitute" will lead to death and destruction for this foolish young man.

In reality, so many believers are similarly enticed by so many of this worldly pleasures, fleshly lusts, carnal desires, and lusts of the eyes. Many committed Christians may say, "I don't visit prostitutes", yet they may be involved in other sins, such as greed, laziness, pride, false witness, slandering.

24 24 Now then, my sons, listen to me;
    pay attention to what I say.
25 25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways
    or stray into her paths.
26 26 Many are the victims she has brought down;
    her slain are a mighty throng.
27 27 Her house is a highway to the grave,
    leading down to the chambers of death.  (NIV)

Do not let our heart turn to the ways of the adulterous woman, to the ways of the prostitute. Similarly, our hearts should not overly focus on worldly pleasures, fleshly lusts, carnal desires, and lusts of the eyes.

Sins of immorality, illicit sex, fornication, adultery will lead to spiritual death and self destruction. In conjunction with those, if believers are to much involved in satisfying carnal desires and fleshly lusts, and pleasures of this world, these may turn away their hearts away from God.  Turning away from God is living with no wisdom.
