Proverbs chapter 15 (part 4) - The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom #Wise sayings of Solomon

Bible study of Proverbs chapter 15, verses 28 to 33. Aided with Matthew Henry Commentary.

28 28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer,
But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. (Proverbs 15:28) (NKJV)

28 28 The mind of the righteous ponders how to answer,
but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things. (Proverbs 15:28) (RSV)

28 28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers,
but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. (Proverbs 15:28) (MIV)

The righteous person is wise and has good understanding. He will think before answering, think before speaking. He is not only slow to anger, he is also slow to answer so that he weighs the various options of answer, and select a most appropriate answer. In crisis situation, he can remain calms and give out good answers, share good plans on how to mitigate the crisis. In situation of contenion with angry customer, he is calm to think of a good answer to pacify the anger, and solve the problem.

On the contrary, the wicked person speaks forth vanity and foul speech. He is fast to respond and answer. When facing an angry customer, he may just refuse to entertain the customer complaint, and say something rash that increase the customer's anger further. In dispute, he will inappropriate things that will fuel the dispute among various disputing parties.

29 29 The Lord is far from the wicked,
But He hears the prayer of the righteous. (Proverbs 15:29) (NKJV)

The Lord loves the righteous person, and listens to the prayer and supplication of the righteous. God is a fair, yet biased. God is fair because he blesses the righteous and chastise the wicked. God is also biased for the same reason, he is positively biased toward the righteous and pour blessings upon the righteous. For the wicked, God will be negatively biased having punishment in store for the wicked.

God sets himself at a distance from those that set him at defiance: The wicked say to the Almighty, Depart from us, and he is, accordingly, far fromthem; he does not manifest himself to them, has no communion with them, will not hear them, will not help them, no, not in the time of their need. They shall be for ever banished from his presence and he will behold them afar off. Depart from me, you cursed.  He will draw nigh to those in a way of mercy who draw nigh to him in a way of duty: He hears the prayer of the righteous, accepts it, is well pleased with it, and will grant an answer of peace to it. It is the prayer of a righteous man that avails much.
30 30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
And a good report makes the bones healthy.[e(Proverbs 15:30) (NKJV)

30 30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes[c] the bones. (Proverbs 15:30) (RSV)

30

30 Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart,
and good news gives health to the bones. (Proverbs 15:30) (NIV)

Good things that we see with our eyes will bring joy to the heart. Example: parents seeing the children coming back for the family reunion. Example: seeing one's favorite singer, actor or actress. Example: seeing the letter of promotion and salary increase. Example: seeing the new car or dream car.

Similarly, hearing good news also brings joy and gladness. Hearing the news of children doing well in exam. Hearing news of best friend getting married. These are some examples of good news which would bring joy.

31 31 The ear that hears the rebukes of life
Will abide among the wise.
32 32 He who disdains instruction despises his own soul,
But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.
33 33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,
And before honor is humility. (Proverbs 15:31-33) (NKJV)

31 31 He whose ear heeds wholesome admonition
    will abide among the wise.
32 32 He who ignores instruction despises himself,
but he who heeds admonition gains understanding.
33 33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility goes before honor. (Proverbs 15:31-33) (RSV)

Characteristics of the wise person:
1)  Be in company of other wise friends.
2)  Listens to rebuke, reproof and correction.
3)  Humble for knowledge and learning, and also a general attitude of humility.

4)  Fear the Lord, love God and obey God's commands.
5)  Take heed of instruction and teaching.

It is the character of a wise man that he is very willing to be reproved, and therefore chooses to converse with those that, both by their words and example, will show him what is amiss in him: The ear that can take the reproofwill love the reprover. Faithful friendly reproofs are here called the reproofs of life, not only because they are to be given in a lively manner, and with a prudent zeal.

Those that are so wise as to bear reproof well will hereby bemade wiser (Prov. 9:9), and come at length to be numbered among the wise men of the age, and will have both ability and authority to reprove and instruct others. Those that learn well, and obey well, are likely in time to teach well and rule well.

The wisdom of those that are willing, not only to be taught, but to be reproved: He that hears reproof, and amends the faults he is reproved for, gets understanding, by which his soul is secured from bad ways and directed in good ways.

Proverbs chapter 15 (part 3) - Plans fail for lack of counsel #Wise sayings of Solomon

Bible study of Proverbs chapter 15, verses 21 to 27. Aided with Matthew Henry Commentary.

21 21 Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment,
But a man of understanding walks uprightly. (Proverbs 15:21) (NKJV)

21 21 Folly is a joy to him who has no sense,
but a man of understanding walks aright.(Proverbs 15:21) (RSV)

21 21 Folly brings joy to one who has no sense,
but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course. (Proverbs 15:21) (NIV)

The wise person who has understanding will choose to live a life which is upright, with good deeds. A good and righteous life will bring about riches and wealth, happiness and joy, peace and security, a meaningful life and eternal life.

For the foolish person devoid of understanding will choose to live a life of folly, with many bad and unhealthy activities. Living a foolish life will lead to many problems, troubles, and spiritual death. The foolish person enjoys living a sinful life.

22 22 Without counsel, plans go awry,
But in the multitude of counselors they are established. (Proverbs 15:22) (NKJV)

22 22 Without counsel plans go wrong,
but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22) (RSV)

22 22 Plans fail for lack of counsel,
but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22) (NIV)

Plans are more likely to be successful if we take in and consider multiple ideas, and multiple points of view. A wise leader will listen to the advice/counsel and ideas of other people, compare and analyze the options, and eventually decide on the best course of action.

If plans are made on only one person's idea, the plan may or may not be successful. That person has a tendency to think from one point of view only. Hence, it is better to consider multiple points of views, multiple ideas, multiple advices.

23 23 To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,
and a word in season, how good it is! (Proverbs 15:23) (RSV)

23 23 A person finds joy in giving an apt reply
and how good is a timely word! (Proverbs 15:23) (NIV)

It is a good thing to be able to give a wise and appropriate reply. This will be a joy and gladness to person who replies, and sweet to the ears for the person receiving the reply. Wisdom in speech is very important as one of the principles of wisdom.

We speak wisely when we speak seasonably: The answer of the mouthwill be our credit and joy when it is pertinent and to the purpose, and is spoken in due season, when it is needed and will be regarded, and, as we say, hits the joint. Many a good word comes short of doing the good it might have done, for want of being well-timed.

24 24 The way of life winds upward for the wise,
That he may turn away from hell[d] below. (Proverbs 15:24) (NKJV)

24 24 The wise man’s path leads upward to life,
that he may avoid Sheol beneath. (Proverbs 15:24) (RSV)

24 24 The path of life leads upward for the prudent
to keep them from going down to the realm of the dead. (Proverbs 15:24) (NIV)

The wise and prudent person lives a life leading to eternal life, leading to heaven. His path is away from spiritual death.

A good man sets his affections on things above, and deals in those things. His conversation is in heaven; his way leads directly thither; there his treasure is, above, out of the reach of enemies, above the changes of this lower world. A good man is truly noble and great; his desires and designs are high, and he lives above the common rate of other men. It is above the capacity and out of the sight of foolish men.

25 25 The Lord will destroy the house of the proud,
But He will establish the boundary of the widow. (Proverbs 15:25) (NKJV)

25 25 The Lord tears down the house of the proud,
but maintains the widow’s boundaries. (Proverbs 15:25) (RSV)

25 25 The Lord tears down the house of the proud,
but he sets the widow’s boundary stones in place. (Proverbs 15:25) (NIV)

God protects the assets of the lowly citizens because God loves the humble people. God hates the proud person, and will punish the proud by destruction of his business empire, his huge estate, his vast properties. To be blessed by God, we must appreciate God and remain humble. We must not be proud and conceited when God bless us with riches and wealth. If we are blessed with greater riches and wealth as compared to other people, we must be ever so thankful and express our continual gratitude to God, acknowledging God for the blessings, and always remain humble.

The proud, that magnify themselves, bid defiance to the God above them and trample on all about them, are such as God resists andwill destroy, not them only, but their houses, which they are proud of and are confident of the continuance and perpetuity of. Pride is the ruin of multitudes.

26 26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
But the words of the pure are pleasant. (Proverbs 15:26) (NKJV)

26 26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
the words of the pure are pleasing to him.[b
 (Proverbs 15:26) (RSV)

26 26 The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked,
but gracious words are pure in his sight. (Proverbs 15:26) (NIV)

Good thoughts and good words are liked by God. God likes people with pure and noble thoughts, wise and gracious words. Gracious words should be spoken to other people. It is no point to speak good only to God and speak wickedly to other people. For God's greatest commandments are to love our God, and to love our neighbours.

God hates the wicked thoughts of the wicked people. Not only God hates the wrong doings which are already committed, God also hates the evil and deceitful thoughts. Because wrong doings start from the evil heart and the evil thoughts.

The former part of this verse speaks of thoughts, the latter of words, but they come all to one; for thoughts are words to God, and words are judged of by the thoughts from which they proceed, so that, 1. The thoughts and words of the wicked, which are, like themselves, wicked, which aim at mischief, and have some ill tendency or other, are an abomination to the Lord; he is displeased at them and will reckon for them. The thoughts of wicked men, for the most part, are such as God hates, and are an offence to him.

27 27 He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house,
But he who hates bribes will live. (Proverbs 15:27) (NKJV)

27 27 He who is greedy for unjust gain makes trouble for his household,
but he who hates bribes will live. (Proverbs 15:27) (RSV)

27 27 The greedy bring ruin to their households,
but the one who hates bribes will live. (Proverbs15:27) (NIV)

We must practice fair business practices and ethics in business and work. The person who takes bribes will somehow bias positively toward the bribe giver, hence, breeding an unfair business practice. Other forms of unfairness are also not acceptable. Business practice should be on win-win basis, all contracts and agreements should be fair and win-win for all parties concerned.

Proverbs chapter 13 (part 2) - Walk with the wise and become wise #Wise sayings of Solomon

Proverbs chapter 13.

Summary: The person who refuse instruction will bring troubles on himself. The person who respects commands and wise teachings will be rewarded with much, including eternal life. Person with good understanding will win favour from God and men. The prudent person makes decision based on knowledge, facts and figures. The foolish who does not heed reproach and discipline will end up with poverty and shame. The company of wise people will increase wisdom, knowledge and understanding. It is important to discipline and chastise our children. A good man will have excess money to leave inheritance to his children. The righteous is blessed with enough money to satisfy all his needs.

13 13 He who despises the word brings destruction on himself,
but he who respects the commandment will be rewarded.
14 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
that one may avoid the snares of death. (Proverbs 13:13-14) (RSV)

13 Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it,
but whoever respects a command is rewarded.
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning a person from the snares of death. (Proverbs 13:13-14) (NIV)

The person who refuse to be instructed will eventually face many problems. The person who does not learn will not have the knowledge and wisdom to do the right things and say the right things, all these will being trouble upon himself.

On the contrary, the person who respects and learns the instructions and commands will increase in knowledge and wisdom. With better knowledge, wisdom and understanding, he will be rewarded in many ways, including better career, profitable business, respect and honour. He heeds and obeys the wise teachings and eventually make his life more purposeful, more joyous, greater peace and harmony. Hence, be rewarded with eternal life, and avoiding spiritual death.

15 15 Good understanding gains favor,
But the way of the unfaithful is hard.
16 16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge,
But a fool lays open his folly. (Proverbs 13:15-16) (NKJV)

15 15 Good sense wins favor,
but the way of the faithless is their ruin.[c]
16 16 In everything a prudent man acts with knowledge,
but a fool flaunts his folly. (Proverbs 13:15-16) (RSV)

15 Good judgment wins favor,
but the way of the unfaithful leads to their destruction.[a]
16 All who are prudent act with[b] knowledge,
but fools expose their folly. (Proverbs 13:15-16) (NIV)

A person with good understanding, good judgement, good sense will speak the right things, do the right things, thus finding favour with God and men. A person with good understanding tends to make good decisions.

The prudent person will make decision based on knowledge, facts and figures. He does not make decision and react based on rumours, gossips, slanders. He does not emotionally-motivated and hasty actions which will be regretted later.

The foolish person is right in his own eyes. He tends to make foolish decisions, say the wrong things. His actions and speech reflect his lack of wisdom and understanding.

17 17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble,
But a faithful ambassador brings health. (Proverbs 13:17) (NKJV)

17 17 A bad messenger plunges men into trouble,
but a faithful envoy brings healing. (Proverbs 13:17) (RSV)

17 17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but a trustworthy envoy brings healing. (Proverbs 13:17) (NIV)

When a state is warring with another state, a messenger or ambassador is often sent for sending message and negotiations. A bad/wicked messenger may misrepresent the one who sends him. Bad messenger may distort the message or say the wrong things, thus bring trouble to himself and the state/person who sends him. Bad messenger may also reveal particulars about his side to the enemy side.

On the contrary, the faithful and trustworthy ambassador can effectively represent his state. He can speak wisely with gentle words that bring about peace. He can negotiate an amicable peace agreement. He understands what is required by his state/person who sends him.

As faithful believers, we should strive to be faithful and trustworthy ambassadors of Christ. We should effectively represent Christ in our lives, in our speech and deeds, in our attitude and behavior.

18 18 Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction,
But he who regards a rebuke will be honored. (Proverbs 13:18) (NKJV)

18 18 Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction,
but he who heeds reproof is honored. (Proverbs 13:18) (RSV)

18 18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but whoever heeds correction is honored. (Proverbs 13:18) (NIV)

The person who does not heed instruction, discipline, and correction, will end up with poverty and shame. For instance, by not learning and correcting his errors, he will not acquire much knowledge. With limited knowledge, he will not earn sufficient income. Or, he earns reasonable income, but due to folly in financial matters, he wastes his money. Eventual result is poverty. With low knowledge and no sense/understanding, he will make so many errors which will bring shame upon himself. His life is full of repeated mistakes.

On the contrary, the wise person who is willing to heed correction, reproach and rebuke will always learn from his errors and mistakes. He will gradually increase in wisdom, knowledge and understanding. He will speak the right things, do the right things. His speech and deeds will win him  favour and honour from God and men.

19 19 A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul;
but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools. (Proverbs 13:19) (RSV)

19 19 A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul,
but fools detest turning from evil. (Proverbs 13:19) (NIV)

For everyone, having a fulfilled desired brings lots of joys, happiness and satisfaction. For the foolish people, they have no desire to turn away from evil, to turn away from sinful works. The foolish people continue in sin, without any intention to repent.

20 20 He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20) (NKJV)

20 20 Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm. (Proverbs 13:20) (NIV)

20 20 He who walks with wise men becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm. (Proverbs 13:20) (RSV)

The wise person normally will mix around with other wise people, and becomes wiser. The company of wise people enable the sharing of knowledge and ideas will increase the wisdom and understanding.

On the contrary, mixing around with foolish people with lots of bad habits and unhealthy activities will influence the person toward that tendency. Examples of foolish and bad habits/activities include orgy, excessive partying, drinking and getting drunk, gambling, sex with prostitutes, drug abuse, gossip, slandering.

21 21 Evil pursues sinners,
But to the righteous, good shall be repaid. (Proverbs 13:21) (NJV)

21 21 Misfortune pursues sinners,
but prosperity rewards the righteous. (Proverbs 13:21) (RSV)

21 21 Trouble pursues the sinner,
but the righteous are rewarded with good things. (Proverbs 13:21) (NIV)

People who live sinful life will eventually face trouble and misfortune. For example, a man who has adultery with somebody's wife will sooner or later be discovered, and will face trouble with his wife and the woman's husband. For example, the man who steals may face prosecution and imprisonment upon conviction. For example, a man who drinks excessively and gets drunk often may be involved with road accident due to drunk driving, or his liver becomes liver cirrhosis, bring himself various health problems.

The righteous who live a good and healthy lifestyle will be rewarded with many good things, such as good health, successful career, profitable business, respect and honour, happy family life, and also eternal life.

22 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous. (Proverbs 13:22) (NKJV)

22 22 A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,
but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. (Proverbs 13:22) (NIV)

A good, righteous person is blessed with abundance. Being wise, he stores his extra money in assets and investments. He will be able to leave a significant inheritance for his children and his children's children. A good person thinks far ahead.

A sinner's excess money is likely wasted on unimportant things, fleshly lust, carnal and worldly desires, lusts of the eyes. Because of folly in managing finances, he will have little inheritance left for his children. His excess money goes to unnecessary expenses, into other people's pocket.

23 23 An unplowed field produces food for the poor,
but injustice sweeps it away. (Proverbs 13:23) (NIV)

23 23 The fallow ground of the poor yields much food,
but it is swept away through injustice. (Proverbs 13:23) (RSV)

Although the land may be inferior (such as hilly land, rocky soil, unfertile land), through industrious labour, the poor may still yield much food from the land. But if the land is not worked on, it will be wasted and nothing is produced.

24 24 He who spares his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. (Proverbs 13:24) (NKJV)

24 24 He who spares the rod hates his son,
but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. (Proverbs 13:24) (RSV)

24 24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children,
but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. (Proverbs 13:24) (NIV)

It is important to discipline and chastise our children. They will not die from the discipline, chastisement and punishment. If they are not disciplined, they may grow up in wicked ways, which will be more destructive. It is better to chastise and guide them along the path of righteousness, speaking the right things, doing the right things, having good habits and attitudes.

25 25 The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul,
But the stomach of the wicked shall be in want. (Proverbs 13:25) (NKJV)

25 25 The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite,
but the belly of the wicked suffers want. (Proverbs 13:25) (RSV)

25 25 The righteous eat to their hearts’ content,
but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry. (Proverbs 13:25) (NIV)

The righteous person works diligently, do the right things, and will be rewarded with enough money and even abundance. Philippians 4: 19 19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

The righteous will have all his needs fulfilled, enough food on the table, enough money to fulfil every need.

But the wicked wastes his money on his sinful habits, such as gambling, womanizing, partying and drinking. The wicked may also be sluggish and lazy, hence earning less income. With less income and more expenses, and foolish handling of finances, the wicked/foolish has not enough money to fulfil all his needs. Instead of fulfilling his needs and his family's needs, he wastes money on wants and wishes.
